Michael T. Babcock GPS Navigation

I use a TomTom GO 720 GPS system in my car. I picked it up for myself at Christmas (in December, 2007) because of the great discounts TomTom was offering through partner stores like Future Shop.

I love the easy-to-use touch-screen interface. The buttons are large enough to be used with gloves on, a must in Canadian winters. The screen is very bright (I have it turned down to 80% brightness in the day and 10% at night), and easy to read. The mounting suction cup worked very well on my windshield but I eventually used the included glue-pad to mount it on my dash just above and to the right of my main console (picture coming) where its easier to reach while driving.

The hands-free bluetooth phone communication is a nice touch, tapping once on the screen to answer a phone call and then using its built-in speakers and mic instead of a headset is quite convenient although the sound quality is a bit lower than my old Motorola headset. I also had to make sure the unit was placed in such a way that the windshield defroster wasn't blowing on it and causing unnecessary background noise.

Themes

I've created a night theme that is primarily red and black (with some very dark colours for water, residential, industrial, park land, etc.) so as to not glare or affect my night vision. Please feel free to download it for your own use, or link to it if you like it. Please don't put copies up on other websites without first requesting my permission.

Installing

Just in case you're not sure how to install a colour scheme on your Tomtom GPS, just plug it in to your cradle and double click My Computer on your Windows machine, and then the TomTom drive from that screen, or the TomTom drive mounted on your Mac or Linux box's desktop. From there, just save the CLR file above into the "schemes" folder/directory shown, then make sure you unmount your TomTom device properly before using it again. You should see my colour scheme in the schemes options now under preferences.
